Have you ever looked around and felt like everyone else is moving forward while you are standing still? You see people stepping into opportunities, building things, growing, and it makes you quietly wonder what is taking so long for you. Even when you try not to compare, the thought still finds its way in.
What makes this even harder is that you are not lazy or unwilling. You are doing what you know to do, showing up where you are, and trying to be faithful, but it still feels like your life is moving at a different pace. That difference can start to feel like delay, and delay can start to feel like being left behind.
For many women, this turns into an internal narrative that is difficult to shake. You start to question your timing, your progress, and sometimes even your purpose. But what if what feels like being behind is not actually a problem at all?
When you feel like you are behind compared to others, it often shows up through questions like these:
Why does it feel like everyone else is ahead of me?
Why is my progress so much slower than others?
Am I missing something that everyone else understands?
Why do I feel overlooked or forgotten?
Is God delaying my life for a reason?
What if I never catch up to where I think I should be?
You feel behind because you are measuring your life against someone else’s timeline instead of recognizing what God is building in your own. What looks like delay may actually be preparation.
The Bible teaches that God does not measure progress the way we do. In 1 Samuel 16, David was not even considered when it was time to anoint a king, yet he was the one God had already chosen. From a human perspective, he looked late, overlooked, and out of position, but from God’s perspective, he was exactly where he needed to be.
Scripture also shows that God often prepares people in private before placing them in public. David’s time tending sheep was not wasted time. It was where he developed the confidence and experience he would later need to face Goliath. This reminds us that what looks like a delay can actually be intentional development.
One of the biggest reasons you feel behind is because you are comparing what you see externally to what is happening internally. You see other people’s outcomes, but you do not see the full process that got them there. At the same time, you are very aware of your own process, which can make it feel like you are moving slower than everyone else.
This is exactly where comparison becomes dangerous. When David was finally brought forward, he was surrounded by brothers who looked more qualified, more experienced, and more obvious. By every visible standard, he should not have been chosen. But God was not looking at what people could see. He was looking at what had been built in David privately.
That private development mattered. While David was tending sheep, he was learning how to protect, how to lead, and how to trust God. Those moments did not look impressive, but they were essential. When the opportunity came, he was not starting from nothing. He was stepping into something he had already been developing.
Another layer to this is how you define progress. The world measures progress by visibility, speed, and recognition. God measures progress by faithfulness, obedience, and growth. That means you can be making real progress and still feel like nothing is happening because it is not visible yet.
There is also the issue of timing. Just because something has not happened yet does not mean it will not happen. It may mean that the timing is not right or that there are still things being built in you that you cannot yet see. When you rush ahead of that process, you risk stepping into something you are not prepared to sustain.

This means you need to release the pressure to keep up with someone else’s timeline. Their journey is not your assignment, and their pace is not your standard. When you compare your life to what you see in others, you disconnect from what God is doing in you.
You also need to start recognizing the value of where you are right now. Instead of viewing this season as waiting, begin to see it as preparation. Ask yourself what is being developed in you, what you are learning, and how God is shaping your perspective during this time.
Another important shift is to trust that being overlooked does not mean being forgotten. There will be moments where it feels like others are being chosen ahead of you, but that does not change what God has already decided. When the time is right, what He has placed on your life will become clear.
Finally, stay committed to faithfulness. Keep showing up, keep doing what God has placed in front of you, and keep building with what you already have. Progress is not always loud, but it is always happening when you remain consistent.
Where in your life are you measuring your progress against someone else instead of recognizing what God is building in you?
This article continues the Mighty Misfits series, where we explore how God intentionally uses people who seem unlikely, overlooked, or disqualified to accomplish His purpose.
In this series, we are uncovering how being last, being small, and having a complicated past does not limit God’s ability to use you, but actually positions you for His glory to be revealed.
