There is a quiet thought that many women carry, even if they do not say it out loud. You love God, you believe in Him, and you want to be used by Him, but something in you keeps saying, “Not me.” It might not be obvious on the outside, but internally, there is hesitation, doubt, and a sense that you do not quite qualify.
Sometimes that feeling is tied to where you are in life. You look around and see other people doing more, being seen more, or stepping into things you feel called to, and it makes you question your own place. Other times, it is tied to your past, the decisions you have made, the mistakes you wish you could undo, or the parts of your story you would rather keep hidden.
The tension is real because on one hand, you feel called, but on the other hand, you feel disqualified. That gap between what you believe God can do and what you believe He can do through you is where many women get stuck.
When you are wrestling with whether God can really use you, the questions tend to sound like this:
Why do I feel like I’m not qualified for what God is calling me to do?
Can God really use someone like me?
What if I don’t have enough to offer?
Why does it seem like others are chosen and I’m not?
Does my past limit what God can do through me?
What if I’m just not the kind of person God uses?
You feel like God can’t use you because you are measuring yourself by the wrong standard. God does not choose based on position, perfection, or appearance. He chooses based on purpose, and He already decided to include you.
The Bible teaches that God does not evaluate people the way we do. In 1 Samuel 16, when Samuel was looking for the next king, he focused on appearance and stature, but God corrected him by saying that man looks at the outward appearance, while God looks at the heart.
That moment matters because it sets the standard for how God chooses. David was not even invited into the room when the selection process started, yet he was the one God had already chosen. This shows clearly that being overlooked by people does not mean you are overlooked by God.
Scripture also shows that God consistently uses people who do not fit the expected mold. From David to Rahab to Peter, the pattern is the same. God does not avoid imperfect people. He works through them.
One of the biggest reasons you feel like God can’t use you is because you have been taught, directly or indirectly, to believe that qualification comes from visibility, status, or perfection. The world rewards the most polished, the most connected, and the most obvious choice, so it is easy to assume God works the same way.
But He doesn’t. God intentionally disrupts that pattern. When Samuel went to anoint a king, he looked at the strongest, most impressive sons first, and nothing happened. It was not until David, the one who was left out and working in the background, stepped forward that the oil flowed.
That detail is important because David was not just overlooked, he was actively doing something. He was tending sheep, being faithful in a place that did not get attention. This shows that your current position does not disqualify you. In many cases, it is preparing you.
The same principle shows up in the story of David and Goliath. David was not the biggest, most experienced, or most equipped by human standards, but he had something more important. He had history with God. Instead of trying to operate like everyone else, he used what he already had and trusted what God had already done in his life.
This is where many women get stuck. You think you need more before you can move forward. More confidence, more recognition, more resources, or more validation. But what God is looking for is not more from you. He is looking for you to use what is already in your hands.
There is also a deeper layer to this. Sometimes the feeling that you cannot be used is not just insecurity, it is spiritual. When Peter was walking closely with Jesus, he still ended up denying Him, but Jesus had already said that Satan desired to have him. This reveals something important. The enemy targets people who have purpose.
So when you feel resistance, doubt, or internal pressure, it is not always a sign that you are disqualified. It may actually be evidence that your life matters more than you realize.

You need to start by releasing the belief that you are not enough as you are. That belief is not coming from God, and it is not rooted in truth. As long as you hold onto it, you will continue to hesitate in moments where you should be moving.
You also need to shift how you define readiness. Readiness is not about having everything figured out or feeling completely confident. It is about being willing to respond when God calls, even if it feels uncomfortable or unfamiliar.
Another practical step is to stop comparing your journey to someone else’s. What God gave them is not what He gave you, and trying to operate in someone else’s lane will only create frustration. Focus on what is already in your hands and how God has already been faithful in your life.
Finally, you need to begin acting in alignment with truth. That means stepping forward even when you feel uncertain, speaking up even when you feel unqualified, and trusting that God’s decision to use you is not a mistake. Growth happens when you move, not when you wait to feel ready.
What belief about yourself have you accepted that is quietly convincing you that God cannot use you?
This article begins the Mighty Misfits series, where we explore how God intentionally uses people who seem unlikely, overlooked, or disqualified to accomplish His purpose.
In this series, we are uncovering how being last, being small, and having a complicated past does not limit God’s ability to use you, but actually positions you for His glory to be revealed.
