Why does following God feel so heavy sometimes?

Why does following God feel so heavy sometimes?

There are moments in your walk with God that feel heavier than you expected. You are doing what is right, following what He said, and trying to be obedient, yet instead of everything feeling light and peaceful, you feel pressure and responsibility. That can be confusing, especially when you believed that obedience would feel easier than this.

Somewhere along the way, many people begin to assume that if something is from God, it should feel effortless or at least consistently peaceful. However, there are seasons where obedience feels weighty, even when you are fully aligned with His will. That tension often leads to deeper questions about whether something is wrong or whether you are truly hearing God clearly.

Questions Women Often Ask About This

Many women wrestle with questions like these:

• Why does following God feel so hard sometimes?
• If I’m in God’s will, shouldn’t it feel easier?
• Why do I feel pressure when I’m trying to obey?
• Is something wrong if obedience feels heavy?
• How do I keep going when what God asked me to do feels like a lot?

These questions often surface when expectations about what obedience should feel like collide with the reality of what it actually requires. They are not signs of failure, but indicators that you are encountering the weight of something meaningful.

In Short

Following God does not always feel light because purpose carries weight. Obedience is not defined by how easy it feels, but by your willingness to continue even when it feels heavy.

You can feel the weight and still follow God.

What the Bible Says About This

On the night before the cross, Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane, and this is one of the clearest moments where we see both His humanity and His obedience on display. Scripture tells us that He was sorrowful and deeply distressed, even to the point of saying that His soul was exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.

He went to the Father and asked if the cup could pass from Him, expressing the full weight of what He was about to carry.

What is especially important is that He did not ask once and move on. He returned to the Father three times, each time acknowledging the weight while also coming back to the same conclusion. Not His will, but the Father’s will be done. The weight was real, and His obedience was just as real.

Let's Break This Down

One of the most important truths to understand is that feeling the weight does not mean you are outside of God’s will. Jesus was fully aligned with His assignment, yet He still felt the emotional, spiritual, and physical weight of what He was called to do. He did not pretend it was easy, and He did not ignore what it would cost Him.

Instead, He brought that weight into relationship with the Father. He was honest about what He felt, but He did not allow those feelings to determine His obedience. This shows us that obedience is not about the absence of weight, but about what you choose to do in the presence of it.

The weight often comes from understanding the significance of what you are carrying. It comes from responsibility, from surrender, and from knowing that your obedience impacts more than just your own life. Jesus understood the full cost of the cross, and that understanding is what made the moment in the garden so intense.

What this Means for Your Life

If following God feels heavy right now, it does not automatically mean something is wrong. It may mean that what you are carrying matters, and that you are beginning to understand the significance of your obedience. Instead of trying to escape the weight, consider what it is revealing about the assignment you have been given.

This is also an invitation to change how you respond to that weight. Rather than internalizing pressure or questioning your path, bring what you feel to God honestly. Jesus did not hide His struggle, and neither should you. There is strength in bringing your questions, concerns, and emotions into your relationship with Him.

At the same time, this is a moment to release the expectation that obedience will always feel easy. Obedience is not always comfortable, but it is always purposeful. As you continue to walk with God, you will find that your capacity to carry what He has entrusted to you will grow.

Reflection Question

What has God asked you to carry that feels heavy, and how are you responding to it right now?
