Why Following God Feels Opposite of Everything Around You

Why Following God Feels Opposite of Everything Around You

Have you ever felt like the more seriously you take your walk with God, the more out of place you feel in the world around you? You start making different choices, thinking differently, responding differently, and suddenly what used to feel normal doesn’t sit right anymore. It can feel like you are constantly swimming against the current.

What makes this even more challenging is that the world does not slow down or adjust for your obedience. The messages you hear every day still push independence, self-promotion, comfort, and control. So when God calls you to something different, it can feel confusing, isolating, and even frustrating.

Many women begin to question themselves in this tension. You wonder if you are doing something wrong, or if you are making things harder than they need to be. But what if the discomfort you feel is not a sign that something is off, but a sign that something is actually right?

Questions Women Often Ask About This

When following God starts to feel different from everything around you, it can raise a lot of internal questions. These questions often sound like confusion, but they are really signs of growth and awareness:

  • Why does living for God feel harder than just going with the flow?

  • Why do I feel like I don’t fit in the same way anymore?

  • Why does what God asks of me feel opposite of what I see around me?

  • Why do I feel tension between what I want and what I know is right?

  • Why does obedience sometimes feel uncomfortable or inconvenient?

  • Why does doing the right thing not always feel easy?

In Short

Following God feels different because it is different. The way God calls you to live often contradicts the patterns, values, and expectations of the world around you.

What the Bible Says About This

The Bible teaches that the life of a believer will not align with the patterns of the world. In Romans 12:2, we are instructed not to conform to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. That means there will be a clear difference between how you live and how the world operates.

We also see throughout Scripture that God’s ways often appear opposite to what feels natural. Strength is revealed in weakness, greatness is found in serving, and life comes through surrender. These are not minor adjustments to how we think. They are complete shifts that require us to trust God beyond what feels logical.

Let's Break This Down

One of the main reasons following God feels so different is because you are being asked to live according to a different system. The world teaches you to elevate yourself, protect yourself, and pursue what feels good. God calls you to humility, surrender, and obedience, even when it does not feel comfortable.

This is where the tension comes from. You are not just making different choices. You are operating from a different foundation. When the world says to secure your position, God may call you to serve. When the world says to hold on tightly, God may ask you to give. When the world says to avoid weakness, God shows you that your strength is actually revealed through it.

These are not small differences. They are complete opposites, and that is why it can feel so uncomfortable at times. It is not because something is wrong with your faith. It is because your faith is requiring you to go against what has been normalized around you.

The transcript highlights this clearly through the idea of paradoxes. You are called to see things you cannot see, to find rest in what feels like weight, to lead by serving, and to gain by giving. These are not ideas that align easily with a culture built on visibility, independence, and self-advancement.

Because of this, following God often feels like rowing against the current. You are moving forward, but it takes intention, effort, and a willingness to keep going even when it would be easier to drift with everything else around you. This is where many women get discouraged, not realizing that the resistance they feel is actually part of the process.

What this Means for Your Life

This means you have to stop measuring your life against what feels normal in the world. Just because something is common does not mean it is correct, and just because something feels difficult does not mean it is wrong. You have to shift your standard from what you see around you to what God is showing you.

You also need to release the need to fit in. There will be moments where obedience makes you stand out, and that is not something to avoid. It is something to embrace. When you understand that you are operating from a different system, it becomes easier to stay grounded in your choices instead of second-guessing them.

Another important shift is to stop interpreting discomfort as failure. Discomfort is often a sign that you are growing beyond old patterns and stepping into something new. Instead of pulling back when things feel unfamiliar, lean in and ask God what He is teaching you in that moment.

Finally, commit to understanding why God’s way is different. Do not just follow instructions without seeking understanding. The more you understand the heart behind what God is asking of you, the easier it becomes to stand firm, even when everything around you is moving in a different direction.

Reflection Question

Where in your life are you feeling tension between what feels natural and what you know God is calling you to do?
