There is a difference between wanting more for your life and actually walking in it. Many women live with a quiet awareness that they are capable of more, called to more, and created for more, yet their daily reality does not reflect that truth. Over time, that gap can become discouraging, especially when you cannot clearly explain what is standing in the way.
It is easy to assume that the barrier must be something external. You may point to your circumstances, your resources, your environment, or even the people around you as the reason you have not moved forward. While those things can influence your journey, they are not always the root issue.
What if the thing holding you back is not outside of you, but within the way you see, think, and respond? That realization can feel uncomfortable, but it is also where real breakthrough begins.
When women feel like they are not fully stepping into who they were created to be, the struggle often surfaces through questions like these:
What is keeping me from reaching my full potential?
Why do I feel like I am capable of more but not living it out?
Why do I hesitate when opportunities present themselves?
Why do I keep holding back even when I know what I should do?
Why do I feel like something is blocking me internally?
Why is it so hard to become the person I believe I am called to be?
What is holding you back is often not a lack of opportunity, but a lens that limits how you see yourself, your capacity, and what is possible. Until that lens shifts, your behavior will continue to match your perception, not your potential.
The Bible teaches that your identity and capacity are rooted in what God has already established, not in what you have experienced. In Ephesians 1, we are reminded that we have been chosen, equipped, and given access to everything we need in Christ. This means your potential is not something you are trying to create. It is something you are called to walk in.
Scripture also shows that transformation begins with a renewal of the mind. If your thinking does not align with truth, your life will not reflect it. This is why understanding who you are in Christ is essential to becoming who you are called to be.
The teaching highlights a critical truth that many people overlook. You can know something intellectually and still live in a way that contradicts it. That is because your actions are not just shaped by what you know, but by what you believe is possible for you.
This is where internal limitation becomes the real barrier. You may have learned certain patterns, beliefs, and responses over time that quietly define how far you allow yourself to go. These patterns often develop through experiences, environments, and repeated messages about what you can or cannot do.
The flea jar illustration makes this clear. The fleas were capable of jumping higher, but after repeatedly hitting a lid, they adjusted their behavior to stay below it. Even when the lid was removed, they continued to operate within that same limit. Their behavior was no longer based on reality. It was based on what they had learned.
In the same way, many women are living within limits that are no longer real. You may have experienced rejection, failure, or restriction at some point, and you adjusted accordingly. Over time, that adjustment became your normal, and now it defines how you show up in your life.
There is also a connection between perception and identity. If you see yourself as limited, you will act within those limits. If you see yourself as capable, you will begin to move differently. This is why changing your perspective is not optional. It is necessary for growth.
The teaching also emphasizes that in Christ, the “lid” has already been removed. The issue is not access. It is alignment. You have to align your thinking and your actions with what is actually true, not what you have grown used to.

This means you need to take an honest look at what you have been agreeing with about yourself. Pay attention to the thoughts that come up when you are faced with opportunity, growth, or change. Those thoughts often reveal the limits you have accepted without realizing it.
You also need to release the idea that your past defines your future. What you have experienced may have shaped you, but it does not have to restrict you. When you continue to operate from past limitations, you carry them into places they no longer belong.
Another important step is to begin acting in alignment with truth, even before it feels natural. That may mean stepping forward when you would normally hesitate, speaking up when you would normally stay quiet, or trying again when you would normally stop. Growth requires movement, not just awareness.
Finally, commit to seeing yourself the way God sees you. This is not about building confidence based on your own ability. It is about recognizing what has already been established in you through Him. When your perspective shifts, your actions will follow, and your life will begin to reflect what has always been possible.
What belief about yourself might be shaping your behavior more than the truth of who God says you are?
This article concludes the Our Foggy Lenses series, where we explore how the way we see shapes how we live.
In this series, we have uncovered how our perspectives, cultural influences, and internal beliefs affect how we interpret people, Scripture, and our own potential.
