There are seasons when life feels heavy, but you cannot quite explain why. Things are not completely falling apart, yet something feels off. You find yourself more distracted, more discouraged, or more emotionally drained than usual, and it is hard to pinpoint where it is coming from.
In those moments, many women start asking a deeper question. Is this just life, or is something spiritual happening? The uncertainty can be frustrating because if you misinterpret what is happening, you may respond in a way that does not actually help you move forward.
That tension matters more than we often realize. Because how you define what you are experiencing will determine how you respond to it.
When life feels unclear or overwhelming, women often wrestle with questions like these:
• How do I know if I’m under spiritual attack?
• Is everything spiritual, or am I overthinking this?
• Why do certain seasons feel heavier than others?
• How can I tell the difference between normal life and spiritual warfare?
• What should I do if I think something spiritual is happening?
These questions come from a real desire to understand what is happening beneath the surface, not just what is visible.
Not everything you face is spiritual warfare, but some things are. The key is learning to recognize patterns, discern what is happening, and respond appropriately instead of reacting emotionally.
The Bible teaches that both natural challenges and spiritual opposition exist, and wisdom is required to discern the difference. In Ephesians 6, we are told that there are battles that are not against flesh and blood, which means some struggles are rooted in a spiritual reality that cannot be seen with the natural eye.
At the same time, Scripture also shows that not every difficulty is the result of an attack. James 1 explains that some struggles come from our own desires, patterns, and internal battles. This means that what we face can come from different sources, and each requires a different response.
The Bible does not call us to assume everything is spiritual, but it does call us to be aware, alert, and discerning so we are not unaware of what is actually happening.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is either over-spiritualizing everything or ignoring the spiritual altogether. Both extremes leave you vulnerable, because you either fight battles that are not there or miss the ones that are.
Spiritual warfare often reveals itself through patterns, not just isolated moments. When you notice the same type of disruption showing up repeatedly, especially when you are moving forward or stepping into something God has called you to, that is worth paying attention to. It may not be random.
Another important factor is timing. If resistance consistently shows up right when you are making progress, committing to growth, or stepping into purpose, that pattern can indicate opposition. The enemy is not interested in disrupting what is stagnant. He targets what is moving.
At the same time, not everything is an attack. Some challenges are the result of habits, decisions, or areas where growth is still needed. This is where honesty becomes important. You have to be willing to look at your own patterns and ask whether what you are experiencing is something external, internal, or a combination of both.
This is why the idea of “studying the film” matters. You are not just looking at what is happening, but how it keeps happening. What triggers it? When does it show up? What is the outcome? The more aware you become, the clearer it is to discern what is really going on.
Discernment is not about guessing. It is about paying attention.

If you want to grow in this area, you have to slow down enough to evaluate instead of reacting immediately. Not every hard moment requires the same response, and responding incorrectly can keep you stuck longer than necessary.
There are some things you need to release. You need to release the assumption that everything is either purely natural or purely spiritual. That mindset will limit your ability to see clearly. You also need to release the habit of reacting emotionally before you have taken time to understand what is happening.
There are also shifts you need to make. You need to become more aware of patterns in your life, especially the ones that repeat when you are trying to move forward. You also need to become more intentional about seeking God for clarity instead of relying on assumptions.
Finally, there are actions you need to take. Spend time in the Word so you can recognize truth. Develop consistency in prayer so you can stay connected and aware. Pay attention to what is happening in your life without ignoring it or exaggerating it.
Discernment is not automatic. It is developed.
What patterns or repeated disruptions in your life might be revealing something deeper than you have been acknowledging?
